We’ve talked in the last about lead paint – why it’s such a hazard in the home for children, dangerous during renovations, and why we’re Lead RRP licensed here at Fiber Control. But what is Lead RRP and why is the rule – the Leader RRP rule – so important for any home or business contractors, not just hazardous material remediation like ourselves? Let’s take a look at the EPA rule, why it was created in only the last 10 years, what you need to know about it when working on your home or commercial building.
EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule
On April 22, 2008, the EPA announced a new rule requiring certification and safe work practices for contractors performing renovation, repair, and painting projects in homes, child-care facilities, and schools. Before that time, it was a “recommendation,” but the EPA saw that lead poisoning, specifically against the most vulnerable victims – children – required enforceable rules. These rules come into effect upon certain requirements:
- Age: Building specifically made prior to 1978, after which the CPSC lead ban banned its use, are affected by this rule.
- Type: Buildings that are child-occupied facilities, including residential (homes), public (schools), or commercial (child care).
- Activity: Any work that will disturb the paint in these buildings, including repairs, renovations, and painting projects. Minor projects, like window replacement, may not count.
Lead RRP Certification and Procedures
Under these circumstances, it’s important to have certified specialists who know what they are doing. The major goals of procedures include containing the work area, minimizing dust, and thoroughly cleaning the area upon completion. In our line of work, where we work to identify, contain, and remediate mold, lead, and asbestos at the same time, we’re fully prepared to leave every building better than we found it.
If you’re looking for help with the removal of lead paint following the best procedures and most secure, contact us. Fiber Control, Inc. can help you detect and remove lead safety using Lead RRP procedures. We also provide asbestos detection and remediation, a substance often found in homes of the same time period.
